Monte Azul - Costa Rica

Experience our Costa Rica, where luxury, fine art, nature and community are brought together. Hiking, bird watching, monkeys, waterfalls, horseback riding, spa treatments, art and cooking workshops and much more await you, all in one place.

Monte Azul is a product of the three founding partners’ passion for the arts, belief in the need to protect our natural environment, and desire to make a positive impact on our local community. Located in the village of Chimirol, in the mountains and rainforest of Southern Costa Rica, Monte Azul operates three principal enterprises: Monte Azul Nature Preserve, Monte Azul Contemporary Art (MACA) and Monte Azul Boutique Hotel.  With these businesses we promote art creation, exhibition and collection, while raising awareness for protecting our natural environment.  Structured around the Artist in Residency Program, MACA provides studio space, materials and lodging for selected resident artists to work.  It is our hope that the unique experience found at Monte Azul will impact the artist’s vision, while also exposing hotel guests to the creative process and raising awareness and appreciation for contemporary art.

Monte Azul challenges resident artists to utilise biodegradable materials and sustainable methods in our studios for the duration of the residency program.

Monte Azul Boutique Hotel, designed and built by the partners to exacting standards, is intended for sophisticated travellers seeking luxury and privacy. All public areas and each luxury suite at Monte Azul is curated with fine art from MACA’s inventory, offering guests and art collectors a unique experience and an alternative way to acquire art.

We believe good business is predicated on being good neighbours.  While respecting the culture, history and traditions of our community, Monte Azul seeks to actively promote awareness of local environmental issues and their global impact through programs addressing recycling, reforestation, organic agriculture and healthy sports and arts activities.

We encourage behavioural change consistent with protecting and regenerating our natural environment and lead by example.  Our commitment to conservation is evident in all aspects of our business.

Monte Azul has so far planted over 5,000 trees, regenerated pasture land and converted coffee plantations to organic and shade grown methods as well as initiating a regional recycling program. We used only recycled and certified woods in our hotel construction and furniture designs.  We recycle, compost and refuse plastic shopping bags.  Finally, we believe the best part of Monte Azul is the people with whom we work.  We treat our employees, contractors, and suppliers with respect.  We invest in our employees though educational scholarships and training opportunities, and invite selected employees to become owners in Monte Azul businesses.

The revenue from every painting, piece of furniture, bag of organic coffee and soaps sold, as well as hotel stays at Monte Azul, is directed towards our social and environmental efforts.

Monte Azul provides the highest quality standards, offering hotel guests and resident artists world class style and comfort, while respecting the environment and our community. A visit to Monte Azul offers our guests the opportunity to see a much different side of Costa Rica, authentic and friendly, a place we know and love, and call home.
