Situated on a formerly uninhabited coral island 12 kilometres southwest of Zanzibar town, Chumbe Island Coral Park is one of the founding members within The Long Run Initiative. Maintaining the integrity of its pristine surroundings for posterity is at the heart of Chumbe’s vision. The eco-lodge site is a carefully planned intermingling of modern day eco-architecture and natural landscapes. Being careful not to disturb the delicate ecosystem, Chumbe has managed to weave each building into the spaces left by nature, taking advantage of sunlight, natural ventilation and rainwater to ensure its sustainability. As a Long Run Destination (Global Ecosphere Retreats® (GER) certified), Chumbe has centred its activities around the 4Cs (conservation, community, culture and commerce) and has incorporated local building technologies and materials into its structural design.

The Long Run Initiative, the Zeitz Foundation’s flagship programme, has been abuzz with activity recently, with five new Long Run Alliance Members and six new Long Run Supporters being welcomed into the initiative, and three of the existing Long Run Destinations completing the rigorous GER® certification process to become fully fledged Long Run Destinations - Global Ecosphere Retreats® (GER) certified. Those Long Run Destinations which have been newly certified include Caiman Ecological Reserve in Brazil, Lapa Rios Ecolodge in Costa Rica and Wolwedans in Namibia. GER® certification is setting a new standard in sustainability and is a driving force in promoting and developing sustainable thinking around the globe. It ensures that best practices are adhered to and innovative approaches experimented with and researched to develop sustainable solutions at LRDs.
