Ancient Culture Meets Eco-tourism on Sumba Island, Nusa Tenggara

Lying south of Flores across the Sawu Sea, it is only a short distance from Bali yet the journey represents a great leap back into the past that can be both exhilarating and relaxing. Eco-tourism takes on a whole new meaning with this ancient culture.

I’m on Sumba, an island only a 90-minute flight but a world away from bustling Bali. It is home to Nihiwatu, a resort that is attracting the world’s hip and helpful by blending luxury, sustainability and access to a rarely explored indigenous culture. Remote barely covers it.
