A recently-concluded study, facilitated by the Zeitz Foundation, evaluates the costs of biodiversity loss and the associated decline in ecosystem services worldwide, comparing them with the costs of effective conservation and sustainable use. In researching Tahi Long Run Destination in New Zealand, Jonathan David Middendorf found, amongst other things, that ecosystem services once valued at NZ$ 161223 increased to NZ$ 887739 some seven years later, further to changes in land-use, primarily from an agricultural farm to a conservation area. The increase was due mainly to restoration work.

Funds raised during the first Zeitz Foundation fundraiser held this July have been assigned to three projects located within Long Run Destinations focusing on water purification; the reintroduction of native species; and the use of alternative cooking methods that reduce the need for firewood.

The Long Run Initiative, the Zeitz Foundation’s flagship programme, has been abuzz with activity recently, with five new Long Run Alliance Members and six new Long Run Supporters being welcomed into the initiative, and three of the existing Long Run Destinations completing the rigorous GER® certification process to become fully fledged Long Run Destinations - Global Ecosphere Retreats® (GER) certified. Those Long Run Destinations which have been newly certified include Caiman Ecological Reserve in Brazil, Lapa Rios Ecolodge in Costa Rica and Wolwedans in Namibia. GER® certification is setting a new standard in sustainability and is a driving force in promoting and developing sustainable thinking around the globe. It ensures that best practices are adhered to and innovative approaches experimented with and researched to develop sustainable solutions at LRDs.
