Conservation—the heart of Segera’s Long Run plan

Segera ensures that 20,000 hectares of Laikipia plateau is wildlife friendly and devotes 10,000ha exclusively to conservation. Segera provides a rangeland for elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards, cheetahs, monkeys, giraffes and most of East Africa’s plains animals.

It is also home to a number of endangered species such as Grevy’s Zebra and African Wild Dogs. In 2009, the destination and its management team are diligently undertaking ecological monitoring activities and has experimental plots to improve livestock and wildlife grazing regimes. Segera’s conservation efforts are many, with its electricity generated entirely by solar and wind power and with all new tourism developments also relying entirely on solar and wind.

Segera is currently installing rain water harvesting equipment, grey water management systems and “bioboxes”—all part of the water conservation measures that are in place as Segera does not exercise its right to pump water from its local rivers. All building materials used are either sourced from the property, such as local stone and sand, or from recycled or sustainably certified sources. In addition, Segera is currently putting into place carbon off-setting projects to be established on the farm in conjunction with the local community.
