The Long Run sits down with founder, Jochen Zeitz.
What does The Long Run mean to you?
The Long Run is really a call to action. It is a way of living that transforms all that we do into a force to move this world sustainably onwards. I was inspired by the amazing people involved in these various sustainable destinations around the world who have dedicated their entire life’s work to making a positive impact in their communities and on the environment. They are truly pioneers whose interests are not about immediate returns, but for “long-run” change. It resonates with me, as well, as it speaks to the way I strategise business. It is my hope that this will become a movement that inspires people to think, act, build, and live for The Long Run—for the sake of our cultures, our communities, and our ecosystems. I truly believe that everyone can make a difference.
Why did you start the Zeitz Foundation for Intercultural Ecosphere Safety?
Over the years, I have come to believe that if each of us were to find new ways to translate our passions into meaningful connections and make a contribution, whether small or large, towards achieving not only personal but larger social and environmental goals, then the world can undoubtedly change for the better. It is with my foundation that I endeavour to do my part.
What is at the heart of the Zeitz Foundation?
Through investing in research and implementing innovative projects that balance conservation, community, culture, and commerce (what I call the “4Cs”), the Foundation will strive to promote holistic approaches to enhancing economic, environmental, and social sustainability in order to achieve “intercultural ecosphere safety.” As one of our objectives, the Foundation will work towards supporting and growing this alliance of Long Run Destinations across the world that exemplify best sustainable practices through our Global Ecosphere Retreat (G.E.R.) certification system.
How does the Zeitz Foundation accomplish its goals?
Everything we aim to do we aim to do by the 4 key principles of being fair, honest, positive, and creative (4keys). This includes listening to the experiences of local communities and stakeholders, encouraging communication and collaboration, participation and creative expression, and protecting and preserving the integrity of the ecosystems found within these retreats are all at the heart of the foundation’s mission.
What is the inspiration behind the Zeitz Foundation?
The Foundation and the work we aim to achieve are inspired by a vision of our ecosphere—our planet and all of its life-sustaining regions—in the healthiest possible state.
When did you launch the Zeitz Foundation?
I launched the Foundation’s website (http://www.zeitzfoundation.org) on May 6 as it marked the 150th anniversary of Alexander von Humboldt’s death in 1859. “As a scientist and explorer, he was the first to see the world as a whole: He discovered that all aspects of the world are intertwined…and that ecology and sustainability are the essential topics for the survival of our modern world” (The African Times, April, 2009).

For the sake of our ecosystems, cultures and communities ... This really resonated with me. I am definitely going to make adjustments to live 'The Long Run' way and hope that I can contribute in some small part.
